Woodworking Terms





CROSSCUT: A cross cut is when a cut is made across the grain of the wood.


DADO : Dado is a groove cut into a piece of wood that another piece of wood will fit into.


DOVETAIL JOINT:  See picture to right


DOWEL : Dowels are used in dowel joints.





KERF: Is the width of the opening caused by a saw blade cut.



MDF: Medium density fiberboard made of compressed particles of wood. Often covered in veneer.


RIP CUT:  When cutting with the grain of wood


Veneer: Thin sliced wood used to cover cheaper wood or mdf, also used in inlays.
